Shopping in Ottawa: Farm Boy

I finally dragged myself out to Farm Boy this past weekend. I didn’t realize that there is one pretty close to me. They had an excellent selection of produce and a good selection of gluten-free items for their size. I was most excited to find some gluten-free bread that wasn’t a frozen lump, haha. They also had a bit of Bob’s Red Mill products and a couple of other gluten-free baked goods. I will definitely be back, their prices were pretty reasonable and the produce was fresh.

Eating in Ottawa: Caprese Part Two

I had to go back to Caprese and try something else from their menu. This time, I had gnocchi and it was probably the best I’ve ever had! We had the same waitress both times and she is really knowledgeable about the ingredients in the dishes and what is vegan or can be made vegan. It is such a relief to be able to go to a restaurant and know that you’ll easily be able to find something to eat.

The only bummer is that the bread (which is supposed to be awesome) and desserts are not vegan. But still, the mains are great, and that is enough to keep me coming back.

Eating in Ottawa: Midnight Owl

The other day, I decided to visit a cute little coffee shop right by my work called the Morning Owl for lunch. It was really busy and the staff were incredibly friendly. I heard that they had some gluten-free stuff, but it was so busy that I didn’t ask and just got a bean and vegetable salad and an iced tea. It was good and I think it might be the only place around that I can get something half-decent for lunch, so I will probably be back!

Caprese Salad

I recently had the pleasure of going to a Caprese here in Ottawa. Caprese is an entirely gluten-free Italian restaurant, just outside of Little Italy. It was amazing, but unfortunately I didn’t have my camera to take any pictures. I got a pasta dish with olives, artichokes and sun dried tomatoes in an oil-based sauce and a gluten-free beer to go with it. Unfortunately, the complementary bread and their desserts were not vegan, but they were very helpful with telling me what menu items were vegan. Highly recommended!

Anyway, after going to Caprese, I was inspired to try my hand at a Caprese-style salad. My version is a stacked tomato, layered with homemade mozzarella-style cheese, basil leaves and some basil pesto, with a balsamic reduction and olive oil drizzle.

Read on for the recipes.

Eating in Ottawa: Wild Oat

Bad Picture, Awesome Nanaimo Bar!

I have been so impressed with the variety of food options available in Ottawa.  One of first places I went to is Wild Oat.  Wild Oat is a bakery and restaurant in one!  Sadly, they don’t seem to have any gluten-free breads, but they do have a lot of desserts, which is always awesome.  Everytime I go, I always get a nanaimo bar.  Yum!

Another favourite of mine is their raw pizza. A cracker crust is topped with some sort of pesto, avacado, lettuce, spiralized veggies and a delicious dressing.

Raw Pizza and Juice

This place is possibly my favourite place so far in Ottawa! Definitely check it out if you ever find yourself here.
